Weekly Summary: Outstanding Performances by Barcelona Sports Academy Athletes on the Global Circuit
Barcelona Sports Academy athletes have completed an intense week on the professional and junior circuits.
It was another action-packed week for the Barcelona Sports Academy community, filled with standout performances on both the pro and junior circuits. From deep tournament runs to battling through tough main draws, our athletes showed incredible grit, passion, and growth on the international stage.
Here is a closer look at how our players fared around the world:
Lauryn John-Baptiste
- Tournament: W50 Guimaraes (ITF World Tennis Tour)
- Location: Guimaraes, Portugal.
- Surface: Hard Court.
- Category: Women's Singles.
Lauryn delivered a flawless performance in the opening round of the qualifying draw, securing a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Portugal's Carla Tomai. She followed it up with a hard-fought three-set battle in the second qualifying round, defeating Belle Thompson of Australia 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 to successfully book her spot in the main draw.
Carrying that momentum into the main event, Lauryn put on a stellar performance in the first round, defeating Slovakia's Viktoria Hruncakova in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. With three consecutive wins under her belt, she comfortably advances to the second round of the main draw.
Oleg Prihodko
- Tournament: Prostejov ATP Challenger 100.
- Location: Prostejov, Czech Republic.
- Surface: Clay Court.
- Category: Men's Singles.
Oleg kicked off his campaign in the qualifying draw with a solid, straight-sets victory in the first round, defeating Slovakia's Michal Krajci 6-3, 6-4.
In the second qualifying round, he pushed through a highly competitive, grueling three-set match against home favorite Jan Kumstat of the Czech Republic. Despite a phenomenal effort and a brilliant second-set tiebreak win, Oleg narrowly missed out on the main draw, falling 4-6, 7-6(10), 2-6. It was a hard-fought performance that showcased his resilience on clay.
Gabriella Julianna Coetzee
- Tournament: J60 Pretoria (ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors)
- Location: Pretoria, South Africa.
- Surface: Hard Court.
- Category: Girls' Singles & Doubles.
- Singles Action: Competing on home soil in the singles round-robin stage (Group C), Gabriella started her campaign with an absolute thriller. She showed massive composure to bounce back from a set down, defeating fellow South African Ariana Van Der Westhuizen 2-6, 6-4, 12-10. She is currently in the middle of group play, with upcoming matches scheduled against Takara Giles (RSA) and Catarina Braun (POR).
- Doubles Action: Partnering with Kuhle Langa (RSA) in the main draw, the duo opened their campaign with a strong, confident performance in the first round, defeating the South African pair of Nina Jansen Van Vuuren and Tineka Strydom 6-2, 6-2. Their run came to an end in the Quarter-finals, where they fell 3-6, 1-6 to Iman Bajramovic (CAN) and Gitta Victor (RSA).
Maria Herazo Gonzalez
- Tournaments: W15 Brasilia & W35 Cuiabá (ITF World Tennis Tour)
- Location: Brazil.
- Surface: Hard Court / Clay Court.
- Category: Women's Singles & Doubles.
Maria put together a busy and highly successful stretch in Brazil across both singles and doubles disciplines:
- W15 Brasilia (Hard Court): In singles, Maria opened with a flawless, commanding performance in the first round, defeating Chile's Agustina Soto Neira 6-0, 6-2, before falling in the second round to Francesca Mattioli 4-6, 0-6. However, she made a sensational run in the doubles draw alongside Mattioli. The duo reached the Final after dominant wins, including a 6-1, 6-2 opening win, a tight 7-6(5), 6-4 Quarter-final, and a 6-4, 6-0 Semi-final victory, ultimately finishing as tournament runners-up after a 4-6, 1-6 battle against C. Romero and N. Zeballos Melgar.
- W35 Cuiabá (Clay Court): Shifting to clay, Maria is set to begin her singles main draw campaign against Camila Romero (ECU). In doubles, she has already found success alongside partner Luiza Fullana (BRA), fighting back from a set down to defeat Sofia Mendonca and Marjorie Souza 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 to advance to the Quarter-finals.
Julia Adams
- Tournaments: W15 Szentendre & W15 Kayseri (ITF World Tennis Tour)
- Locations: Hungary & Turkey.
- Category: Women's Singles & Doubles.
- W15 Szentendre (Clay): Julia put together a fantastic singles run on the Hungarian clay.
She defeated Italy's Federica Bilardo 7-6(5), 6-0 and home favorite Kitti Molnar 6-3, 6-2, before narrowly falling in a highly competitive three-set Quarter-final battle to Pia Lovric 2-6, 6-4, 4-6.
W15 Kayseri (Hard): Moving to Turkey, Julia started her singles campaign strong with a straight-sets 6-4, 7-5 win over Egypt's Jana Hossam Salah to advance to the second round. In doubles, she and partner Ilayda Baykan (TUR) faced a tough opening match, falling 0-6, 2-6 in the first round.
Mia Horvit
- Tournament: W15 Kursumlijska Banja (ITF World Tennis Tour)
- Location: Kursumlijska Banja, Serbia.
- Surface: Clay Court.
- Category: Women's Doubles.
Mia began her doubles campaign on the Serbian clay courts alongside partner Marie Mettraux (SUI). The duo advanced through the first round of the main draw via a walkover (W/O) against Aruzhan Sagandykova and Karine Sarkisova. They now move into the Quarter-finals, where they will face the Bulgarian pairing of Ralitsa Alexandrova and Andzhelina Kostova.
